The Festival kicks in with staff injuries.
The season has started at last with the beginning
of the Verbier
Festival....some hardware
problems and staff accidentsSandy on
Monday was cycling down to
Migros.......Hanski was playing
volleyball...the cigarette
machine...one of the computers... the dishwasher.
The season has started at last with the beginning
of the Verbier
Festival. On Monday Harold's was the official check-in point for the
Academy musicians which is really good news for us as it means not only instant
publicity but also endorsement from the Festival organisation. In consequence,
we have, as with the other years, had a steady stream of students using us as a
base and eating here. And with the
start of the official Festival, we have seen many old friends and stars drop by,
including Mischa Maisky and Ilya Gringolts. David Garrett has also been by a
couple of times. We hope to see more over the next couple of
weeks. But it has not been a completely
rosy week with some hardware problems and staff accidents. Sandy on Monday was
cycling down to Migros to do some shopping fo Mom when a kid thought it funny to
jump in his path, knocking him off his bike. The kid ran off laughing. Scratched
with a badly sprained wrist and knee (not so badly), he has been unable to work
all week.Then yesterday, Saturday,
Hanski was playing volleyball when one of her partners had the good idea of
standing on her toe. She was unsure if it was broken and hobbled to the doctor
who proceeded to give her crutches and instructed her to take the night off.
This meant that Alan, who had been working flat out organising a dinner for
80-100 people as well as an aperitif and a barbecue for the following day for
the Swiss-Russian Cultural Foundation, including all the logistics for its AGM
(including collecting the members and guests from Martigny, the lodging, etc.)
With the 2 full-time jobs on his hands and covering for the injured, Alan
managed to crank up 100 hours in 6 days! Unsurprisingly, he admitted that he
felt tired...As if this wasn't enough,
we have had more than our fair share of hardware problems for the week. First
was the cigarette machine. Alan quickly pinpointed the fact that a fuse had
gone, and guessed that this was due to its age. But on Sunday you can't find a
fuse. Changing it on the Monday, the machine still refused to work, and so we
had to call in a technician. Within a few minutes he realised that the
difficult-to-reach fuse wasn't sitting tightly in the spring, which simply
needed tightening a tad. Groan!Next on
the list was one of the computers that began making a horrendous noise. Alan
thought that the problem was a dirty fan, but it appears that it might be the
hard disk. We'll find out next week when we take it in to be repaired. But it is
a drag that it has happened right at the beginning of the busiest part of the
summer.Finally, on Saturday, the
dishwasher refused to heat up. A phone call to the maintenance company helped
find that a wire had broken. A screwdriver job later and the machine was back up
and running. But it was simply not a problem that a tired Alan
needed.A finally, the steamer has been
taken away to be repaired. They said they would bring it back on Friday, but
we're still waiting for it. Maybe next Friday?
