An exceptionally quiet January.
With less snow in the Alps than in Scotland, we
understand that many Brits have been abandoning Verbier in favour of the
Highlands.
With less snow in the Alps than in Scotland, we
understand that many Brits have been abandoning Verbier in favour of the
Highlands. A BBC report last week stated that Glenshee normally has 8'000
visitors per season, but this year they have already had 35'000 and the resort
village's turnover is up 500 %. Under these conditions and with the weak pound,
it is understandable that the resort has not been so quiet for a great number of
years at this time of year. There are not even any queues in the supermarkets at
6 pm which is normally peak time.
The
day-shifts have been so quiet that we are wondering why we have two staff on
when one would be more than enough, especially as the Internet usage is well
down now that most people have their own laptops or iPhones and access is being
offered in many bars. So we are considering on having only one staff member on
in the future. We will be doing a trial run this week, as Izzy has been having
trouble recuperating and would like to pull out of the team, at least for a
while, if not for the rest of the season, especially as she is studying at the
same time.
Apart from Izzy feeling
down, we have still been plagued by health problems that has made it a nightmare
to organize schedules. Sara was sick for a few days as was Silvia. With George
recovering from his hairline fracture and therefore unable to do certain tasks
we haven't had much flexibility. Although the girls are healthy again, George
has now managed to injure himself further by damaging his shoulder yesterday, As
luck has it, he has 4 consecutive days off on the new schedule that should help
give him time to recover. Fortunately, we have been able to count on ex-staff
member Selina to come and stand in. A real star. Her sister Diana, who was the
first of the family to work for us a long time back is going to join us on a
part-timer for the rest of the season from February.
