A Family Business...or an Xtreme Sunday

The last couple of weeks have not been very exciting for us. Ben has left as mentioned in the previous blog and we had a temporary replacement till Gaëlle went on holiday on Friday. She will be filling in the spare bits for the next couple of weeks and we will also be using Sandy on some days.

The sudden rise of temperatures from minus 8-9°C to plus 8-9°C and pleasant conditions were not conducive to people staying inside and therefore in Harold's. Our day shifts took a serious hammering. And with an especially warm evening on Saturday, the Xtreme street party a little further up the street through to the Medran lift station sucked up the clientèle, making it one of the quietest Saturdays of the season. However, on Sunday the weather changed and the rain poured down to altitude, making the conditions on the slopes very dangerous with the risk of avalanches. Téléverbier closed the lifts and the population decided it would be a burger day. Alan did the opening joined by Sandy. No sooner were the doors open at 10 am that we already had the first orders. By noon we had already done almost half the expected turnover for the shift. And then the crowds arrived, including a table of 15. We had to call Viviane in to help out. By 2 pm we had passed the previous evening's shift and what we normally do the whole of a Sunday. As Saturday evening had been disappointing, we still had plenty of prep left, though it was starting to get thin. So we called up Gaëlle to help out for an hour to allow us to catch up. What was to turn out to be the biggest day shift on record outside the New Year period also turned out to be a real family affair! Congratulations to Sandy for his faultless management of the grill at only 15 years old. Mum Viviane was a little peeved at being told what to do by her son...

Sunday evening was quiet, though, but we hoped to do better with the Quiz Night on Monday. It turned out that we were in competition with a couple of other events, and the evening was a bit of a flop with only half a dozen teams. The rest of the week remained relatively quiet, especially as there were no major sporting events to attract custom.

Friday there was a mini street party for the Carlsberg High Five . We did a little stand with the local snowboard club, the Da Club, but with with little else for the customers apart from drinks stands, the event didn't take off and most were closed by 7 pm. The last stand to close was ours at 9:30 pm, thanks mainly to the fact that we had a heater and some hot drinks. Sale of food, on the other hand, was close to zero. But the event did bring people in on Saturday evening and we had good shift.
