Internet Cyber Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you use Macs and not Windows PCs?

Macs are more stable, easier to network, are not virus-prone, and require considerably less maintenance.

I've never used a Mac. Is it much different from a PC?

The user interface is almost identical on both platforms as far as the programs go, so you should have no difficulty using the software.

I need to access documents made on a PC. Will I be able to open them on a Mac?

Nearly all documents are in the same format on both platforms. Therefore you should have no difficulty opening them.

Do you have the software I need to open my files?

We have Microsoft Office available on all computers, as well as graphic programs that will open over 300 different formats, Acrobat Reader, E-Fax Reader, and a number of others.

Can I bring and use my own laptop?

Yes. You can connect to the Internet using our high speed WiFi network (802.11n), Ethernet, ISDN, or analog. See Prices for details.

Do you have Chat programs?

Yes, the most common chat programs are available.

In what language is your software?

All our programs are in English.

Can I print?

Yes, we have a colour printer/scanner/photocopier.

Can I scan?

Yes, though we advise you get help first.

Can I send a fax?

Yes, a fax machine is at your disposal. However, for security and responsability reasons, we cannot accept incoming faxes for clients. We suggest that you receive incoming documents using e-mail or efax.

Do you have Internet telephony, and, if so, how much does it cost?

Yes. Most Internet telephone calls are included in the price of usage, as long as the call is being made to a land-line. There is a small surcharge for calls to mobile phones and to certain countries. In case of doubt, ask.

My documents are being sent in compressed format. Will I be able to open them?

Yes. Stuffit Expander opens nearly all formats, including zip, tar, gzp, etc.

My documents are on a USB key. Can I use it?

No problem.

Do you have a CD burner?

Yes, some machines have a combo DVD/CD-R drive. However, we cannot guarantee that a machine will be available when you arrive.

Can I install my own software on your machines?

No. You do not have the access privileges necessary to install anything on the machines.

I'm working on a document but don't have time to finish it now. Can I save it and come back and finish it later?

Members can save work in a folder called User Work for later retrieval. Files on the desktop are deleted immediately and automatically at logout. On request we can temporarily save your work, though it is impossible for us to be responsible for specific documents.

I was unable to get to my site, and/or the connection was very slow. Do I get a discount?

No. We are in no way responsible for the fact that a server is down or that there is a bottleneck somewhere. We have a very fast connection, and any slowdown is an external problem. Even Ferraris get stuck in traffic jams. After all, you still have to pay the telephone company for your calls whether your correspondant is unavailable or makes you hold the line.

I've never used the Internet before. Can you show me how?

No. Neither do you get skiing lessons included with ski rental or driving lessons when you rent a car. However, we will endeavour to help you if you have a problem. In fact we highly recommend that you ask first before trying to sort out a problem yourself.
